The magnolias buds have peeked open, the crocus patches are in bloom and the sailboats are back in the Jardin du Luxembourg, which was full of cheerful visitors all week. In the far corner the pétanque club was busy debating, and then measuring, their boules placement on the boulodrome with their jackets hung smartly on a rack nearby and the closing time when the guards blow their whistles has reached 5.45pm on its slow march to mid-year (9.30pm) and back again.
