I’ve had many anxious messages asking whether people should change or cancel their trips following the riots and tension across France this week in response to the inexcusable and tragic death of 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk. My answer remains the same as usual: travel in France remains safe provided you don’t go looking for trouble and in a country that’s famous for disruption there’s no guarantee there won’t be something else happening in the future, should you reschedule. More importantly I direct you to these articles for clearer words that I can draft on the situation and the institutionalised racism inherent in France, partly fuelled by a blinkered and determined approach to colourblindness. My heart aches for his family.
